“Ubuntu” is a popular South African phrase which loosely translates to “I am because you are.” The essence of the interconnection of all human beings to one another defines itself in this one word, a word that brings together how your words and actions shape me, and vice versa. We strive together, suffer together, succeed together, celebrate together…in a nutshell, we live, as one, all together.
In January, I met an extraordinary couple during a random outing in Hollywood. Though the event had its fun moments, it couldn’t compare to the transcendent charisma of Marrie and Thomas. Their energy lit the night as our laughter reverberated through the starlit Los Angeles sky. Wolfing down Pink’s hot dogs before calling it a night, we exchanged Facebook profiles and took to social media to stay in touch.
On July 23rd, the light flickered here on earth as Marrie made her way to the skies to shine down upon us. In an unpredictable course of events, she was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer and lost the battle, and all within two weeks.
Although brokenhearted, Thomas’ strong spirit continues to fight to fulfill his and Marrie’s wishes to inspire other cancer patients and help educate people.
Operation: You Changed My Life, Marrie Tang is a campaign whose mission is to invoke a change to live life fully, and to make a decision to do something different today for yourself in your life. Help us spread the word by simply taking a photo of yourself – your friends, your family, whoever – with a sign saying, “You Changed My Life, Marrie Tang” and email it to email@example.com.
I am because you are. We affect each others’ lives everyday. Let’s decide now, in this moment, to live for our greater good, as it directly affects the greater good of this world.
